Oregon Coast to Boise Day 4 Thursday September 12, 2019

Today starts in Astoria, Oregon
And finishes in Yakima, Washington

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
From Astoria, I had planned to ride north into Washington and wander around a bit
but my weary bones advised strongly that I shorten the route a bit

Heading directly east, there are no towns until you cross over into WA

Kelso is on the Washington side of the bridge
You have to ride through to get to I-5
Castle Rock is a little town on I-5 where I stopped for gas
US-12 is the way east to Yakima

As I turned off I-5 onto US-12 there was a little restaurant
I stopped for lunch.  This is a nice throw-back kind of place, very friendly
I had a quite good BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) and a so-so potato salad
Mossyrock is a nice, neat little town

I found the city hall and community center
A very quiet town, we might be looking at the only police car
They may have been trained by Andy Taylor and Barney Fife (wink, wink)

US-12 is beautiful.  Winding over high mountain passes
and crossing over verdent valleys
In the mountains, the riding was sufficiently challenging
that I had to pass on taking photos while on the move
I stopped in Packwood at Blanton's Market

The only large-ish grocery for many miles.

This is Indian territory and they paid homage with
a nice mural to a long-ago matriarch Mary Kiona

From time to time, Mt. Ranier would poke his head above the horizon
Yakima, Yakima County, Washington
I found Owens Harley-DavidsonApparently, they will sell you
any type of two wheel vehicle you'd like and a few four-wheelers as well

I guess Harley will allow this type of non-exclusivity in small markets
I have seen it before in Kennewick OR,
Dodge City KS,  North Platte NE and some others

They are doing some huge re-paving work on the street.
When I got here, there were all sorts of men and machines on the road
and lanes were blocked off with cones in both directions
It was challenging just to turn left into the dealership
Then, when I came back out, it was tough to get back onto the road

Turns out that the motel was just across the road from the dealership
Best Western Plus 1614 N 1st St
Today's ride, while not long in miles,
was challenging in long stretches of mountain roads
But I'm very glad I did it

The Route Today

I'd like to hear from you
